Design Question: How Can I Refresh a Space on Campus?

The estimated reading time for this post is 1 minutes

The question we are going to look at this week was submitted by Jessica Ochoa, from Halo’s Tutoring Shop from Santa Ana High School. She actually stopped by our office and wanted to brainstorm some ideas with us on how to refresh the library tutoring space for the students after school. We took a moment together as a team and thought about it for a little while.

Wes: The first word I noticed is that she said refresh; she didn’t say renovate and she didn’t say tear down a wall. Sounds like she is looking for a way to make it look fresh.

Bryan: Yes, I think the most important thing is actually embrace the connection that maybe we already have –  so is this a place for connection with students and how can we get connected with them in the design process?

Keep the student first in mind and bring the students in on that conversation.

I don’t know what the actual space looks like that is going to be designed.  I have seen some interesting cool pictures on Twitter of spaces being refreshed at Heninger.  First and foremost, we bring the students in and help them be part of that conversation.

Jessica: I got some inspiration just by walking around and looking at some space at Heninger and there are some actually low cost ways to look at making the seating arrangements more comfortable, more like a coffee shop experience. I agree with you because I think that we need to talk with the students and see what kind of spaces they enjoy and what kind of feeling are they looking for.

Wes: One great affordable thing I saw on your blog post about the visit to Heninger is a milk crate with a pillow on top and those are aligned along the sides of the low table as a super inexpensive seating arrangement. And, you can change the color by changing the colors of the pillows. So there’s a great cheap idea that we saw this week.
