Cooking Up Chemistry

The estimated reading time for this post is 1 minutes

We are spicing up our hybrid course development, with a full plate of new courses, including Chemistry!

We recently created a graphic to help us visualize and market the hybrid courses we are developing.

We need to get chefs in the kitchen! Part of my personalized learning plan includes a short-term goal of assembling a team of 20 part-time content writers, assessment designers, and instructional designers for this year’s course development menu. On that topic, I had a wonderful visit this morning with Marie (pronounced Mary) Claire Siddal at Godinez Fundamental High School to discuss her interests and passions (this is a bit of a theme in 21st Century Learning!)  and potential for working together.

She teaches honors and AP Chemistry and has quite a bit of blended learning going on, including using Google Classroom and elements of flipped instruction.

It was an intriguing conversation and I wanted to know more about her teaching practice, which includes elements like Genius Hour as part of her weekly schedule!  Things are getting hot in the kitchen with hybrid Chemistry!

One of images that stands out to me is her weekly schedule which is not only a tool for her in terms of organization, curriculum and instruction & pedagogy, but it’s also a branding tool because it helps students conceptualize, understand, process and remember their learning journey through the week.  Check out some of the features of her schedule:

What stands out to me most about the visit is her enthusiasm.  In our FIND debrief at the end of the visit, she shared that a new insight for her was that she was actually more open to working with Team 21C than she had originally thought.  I am grateful that she took time out of her schedule to meet and discuss the future of what we can create together.

Thanks Wes – it was really fun to have you visit my classroom. I wish you could have stayed and seen the student created commercials for the products they created. It was an exciting day!
