#commitment

Last week, we held a group interview for program specialist of 21st Century Learning using a consultancy protocol that Daniel Allen, Executive Director of School Renewal (check out his gut-wrenchingly honest blog here), facilitated for us. I learned so much about the work we were engaging in because I had to talk for five minutes non-stop about a challenge facing my department, which I characterized as “how do we recruit teachers to create and teach hybrid courses which are unlike any learning environment we currently know?”

Some reflections about what I want for our hybrid courses – they should

  • value students’ language and culture,

  • harness mobile technology with students as creators

  • lead students to be able to defend their learning in front of a content area expert – teacher, professional, professor – in a ten minute oral defense of their learning in the hybrid course.

  • lead students into one on one conversations about the meaning of their learning with others and their instructors

  • Be accessible 24/7

  • Be accessible on any device

  • Help students develop an online portfolio

What I realized is that I don’t do a good enough job telling the story of where I have come from, what my vision is, and where I want to see our teachers and students go.  I came away from that experience committed to be more open, transparent and willing to put effort and time into telling the story of 21st Century Learning.
